STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On August 12, 2004, the USPS issued these postage stamps in Sacramento, California as a part of their American Treasures series, showcasing American artist Martin Johnson Heade's painting "Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth" (1890), which is part of the National Gallery of Art's collection.
Born on August 11, 1819, in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, Heade received his first training from folk artist Edward Hicks and later continued his studies in Rome, Italy. He became known for his landscape paintings, which were heavily influenced by the Hudson River School of artists. Heade's focus on capturing light and mood in his paintings rather than portraying exact landscapes sets him apart from other artists of his time.
In 1883, Heade moved to Florida and was inspired by the subtropical landscapes and stunning flowers, particularly the Magnolia grandiflora. He produced 17 paintings featuring these beautiful flowers, often laying them on velvet for a striking effect. By the end of his life, Heade had created an impressive collection of still lifes and landscapes. Don't miss your chance to add these vintage Martin Johnson Heade American Treasures stamps to your collection or use them to add a touch of southern sophistication to your mailings.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The spiritual significance of Martin Johnson Heade’s painting "Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth" lies in its meditation on purity, stillness, mortality, and transcendence through beauty. Unlike floral arrangements that feel decorative or casual, Heade’s magnolias are monumental and almost sculptural—presented with reverence, as if placed upon an altar. The deep blue (almost black) velvet backdrop creates a contemplative, nearly sacred atmosphere, transforming a still life into a visual sanctuary.
The magnolia itself carries longstanding spiritual symbolism. With its large, luminous white petals and strong central form, it represents dignity, endurance, and spiritual nobility. White blossoms often signify purity and illumination, while the magnolia’s thick, waxy petals suggest resilience—beauty that is not fragile, but grounded and enduring. In this painting, the magnolias appear both open and complete, suggesting fullness of being rather than fleeting bloom.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: Introduced in 2001, the “American Treasures” stamp series (2001-2014) showcases beautiful works of American fine art and crafts. This striking postage stamp series from the United States Postal Service (USPS) was conceived as an art-focused stamp program designed to transform postage into miniature museum pieces. The series broadened USPS’s traditional art offerings by highlighting not only fine art paintings but also decorative arts, folk traditions, textiles, crafts, and other culturally significant objects from American history. Rather than commissioning new illustrations, the stamps typically reproduce historic works of art in rich, high-fidelity color, often presented in cohesive panes that function as curated sets. Subjects have included early American quilts, Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, still-life paintings, and masterworks from museum collections, reflecting a curatorial philosophy that values both elite and everyday artistic expression. With full-bleed designs and minimal graphic intrusion, these postage stamps emphasize the artwork itself, allowing texture, color, and craftsmanship to take center stage. Over time, the American Treasures series has become one of USPS’s most respected art programs, celebrated for elevating decorative and folk traditions alongside canonical fine art, and for positioning postage stamps as accessible cultural artifacts that carry American artistic heritage into daily life.
