Born on March 18, 1901 in Florence, South Carolina, William H Johnson became one of the most prominent African American artists of the 20th century, known for his distinctive folk style paintings. As a young artist, he honed his skills by copying comic strips from newspapers and attending the National Academy of Design in New York City. Despite facing discrimination, Johnson's talent was recognized and he received several awards from the National Academy of Design. However, he was not granted the prestigious Pulitzer Travel Scholarship, possibly due to his race, until his mentor, Charles Webster Hawthorne, raised funds to help him study abroad.
