STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1996 Yellow Rose stamp was issued as a 32-cent First-Class Mail definitive in the USPS Flora & Fauna series. This stamp features a yellow version of a rose design based on an original color sketch by artist and illustrator Gyo Fujikawa. The same basic rose artwork had previously appeared in red and pink versions. The self-adhesive stamp was issued in several booklet formats, including a booklet pane introduced on October 24, 1996, in Pasadena, California, and was printed by J.W. Fergusson & Sons for Stamp Venturers using photogravure.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Roses belong to the genus Rosa and are among the world’s most recognized and widely cultivated flowering plants. Their blossoms vary greatly in form, fragrance, and color, ranging from white and cream to yellow, pink, red, orange, and purple. Yellow roses are especially prized for their warm color and are popular in gardens, bouquets, wedding florals, and celebratory arrangements.

YELLOW ROSES & WEDDING FLOWERS: Yellow roses bring warmth, brightness, and an uplifting quality to wedding florals. They pair naturally with ivory, white, sage green, blue, peach, coral, and other sunny garden colors. Their cheerful appearance works especially well for spring and summer weddings, garden celebrations, rustic events, and couples seeking a floral motif that feels romantic without relying on traditional red or pink roses.

YELLOW ROSES & SYMBOLISM: Yellow roses are strongly associated with friendship, joy, optimism, warmth, and affection. Unlike red roses, which are closely tied to passionate romance, yellow roses often convey happiness, appreciation, and supportive love. Their bright color makes them especially fitting for celebratory correspondence, thank you notes, anniversaries, and joyful wedding mail.

GYO FUJIKAWA & THE ROSE DESIGN: Gyo Fujikawa was a noted American illustrator and children’s book artist whose work also appeared on U.S. postage. The rose image used for this stamp originated from one of several sketches she created for USPS consideration during the late 1980s. The elegant simplicity of her rose design allowed the same artwork to be adapted into multiple color variations over several years.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Yellow Rose design symbolizes friendship, happiness, optimism, affection, warmth, gratitude, and joyful connection. Its bright yellow petals evoke sunlight and positive energy, while the rose itself remains an enduring symbol of beauty and love. For weddings and meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses happiness, appreciation, and a warm, flourishing bond.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The USPS Flora & Fauna series developed from a group of definitive stamps featuring American plants and animals and ultimately included dozens of designs issued in sheets, booklets, and coils. The series showcased flowers, berries, fruit, birds, mammals, insects, and other natural subjects in colorful, realistic artwork. It served as an important definitive series through the 1990s and into the early 2000s before being gradually replaced by newer regular-issue stamp programs.
