STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, the USPS issued a set of 29-cent postage stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features White Mountain Avens (Geum peckii), a rare alpine wildflower native to high-elevation regions of New Hampshire and parts of Atlantic Canada. The design presents a close-up of the plant’s white, five-petaled blossoms set against its low-growing, serrated green foliage. The flowers are simple yet radiant, with a cluster of golden stamens at the center that enhances their sunlit appearance. The clean, light background keeps the focus on the bloom’s crisp symmetry and delicate structure, consistent with the series’ emphasis on clarity and botanical authenticity.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: White Mountain Avens is a small, perennial plant that grows close to the ground in windswept alpine and subalpine habitats. The blossoms are typically about one inch wide, composed of five rounded white or yellow petals surrounding a dense central disk of stamens. The leaves are leathery and deeply veined, adapted to survive cold, exposed mountain environments. Blooming in late spring to early summer, the flower brings a burst of color to rocky, high-altitude landscapes where growing conditions are severe.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, White Mountain Avens symbolizes resilience, quiet endurance, and elevation of spirit. Thriving in harsh alpine climates, it represents the strength to flourish in demanding conditions. Its low-growing form suggests humility, while its white or yellow bloom conveys optimism and inner light. Because it grows at high elevations, it carries symbolism of clarity and perspective—encouraging spiritual grounding even while aspiring upward. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, White Mountain Avens stands as a subtle yet powerful emblem of perseverance and the quiet brilliance that emerges in life’s most challenging environments.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
